Here’s a really SUPER simple DIY Behavior Chart that you can use for your kids, to help encourage good behavior via a star reward system.
DIY Behavior Chart Items Needed
- A piece of sturdy foam board.
- Foam Shapes (Stars, Hearts or other)
- Velcro Sticky Back Tape
- Letter Stickers
- Sharpie Marker
Secure a long strip of velcro across the length of your board, leaving room to either write and place letter stickers for your child’s name. I have four kids and therefore needed four strips or rows on my Star Chart.
Add pieces of velcro tape to your stars or hearts so they can be secured and removed from your chart.
Leave room on the bottom of the board to write out a list of Good Behaviors that will earn your child a Star. Likewise you can also add details on behavior that will cause them to lose a Star.
When the kids are EXTRA good, they get a “SUPER STAR ACTION” star (Mega Heart). When they reach 10 stars they get a little gift from the dollar store. You’d be surprised how excited they get over the simplest of things.
This star chart behavior reward system has been incredible for us. I’ve even heard my four-year old twin boys whispering to each other to “be good, or you’ll lose a star!”. It’s really easy to create and maintain.
Even when you are outside your home, you can implement the Star Chart. We’ve been in the store when I’ve asked my son to sit quietly in the chart, and to my surprised he DID! His motivation? A STAR on the chart, of course!
We use this DIY behavior chart in addition to a chore chart. Used in combination they can be a fantastic tool to help you teach your children the value of work, and the benefits of a good attitude.
