This St. Patrick’s Day create a Leprechaun Door in your yard. Create a bit of magic for your kids. Complete with a jar of gold nuggets. This simple, inexpensive project will take you only a few hours and can be done with your kids.
Leprechaun Door Items Needed
- Posterboard
- Exacto Knife
- Green, Gold and Brown Paint
- Door Knob
- Wooden Cutouts for Hinges
- Floral Wire
Cut out the shape of your door. Then score length wise lines into the board to create vision “boards” and make it bend. Trace out a clover and cut that out with your exacto knife too.
Paint your board a base brown color. The goal is to mimic the look of an old wooden door. Therefore, we need layers of color. You can also buy black poster board to eliminate this step.
Once the brown paint dries, cover it with green. Be sure to leave some of the brown peeking out. After painting you can take a paper towel and wipe away some of the green. You can also take some gold paint and brush some sparkle along the door creases.
I like the idea that the leprechaun has gold dust residue on the outside of his hideaway door.
Hot glue on some gold painted wooden cutouts for the hinges. Also glue on a door knob. I got mine at Michael’s. Just be careful not to glue your adornments over the creases in the door.
I collected rocks from our yard and painted them with gold shimmer paint to create gold nuggets. I dropped them into a glass jar to put next to the door. Every good leprechaun has a bit of gold nearby. I like the raw unrefined look of these. As if our leprechaun mined them himself from deep underneath out tree.
Punch holes into the side of your door to thread your wire through. Loop it around your tree trunk to hold your door in place. No nails or drilling needed.
